Upcoming Events…

Tsholofelo Sanctuary is the 24/7 home of six children between the ages of 9 and 15. They have been placed with us by social workers and would otherwise have to live in large institutions. At Tsholofelo they can be a family with their own foster mother and receive homework support, medical and psychological care and everything else they need. Our hope is to transform the lives of these children through our long term investment of love and care. Join us in this challenge and sponsor the riders taking on the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge on 20 November 2016.

About Us…

Glenn & Cheryl Staples started Tsholofelo Baby Sanctuary in November, 2005.  We had been inspired by our adopted daughter’s first birthday the month before and felt led by God to make it possible for other children to be adopted and to know the love of a family.

Abby was miraculously brought into our family at the age of 8 weeks.  Tsholofelo had been the surname given to her by the baby sanctuary where she spent the first weeks of her life. It means hope in Sotho and so we used this as the name of our sanctuary. For the first eight years we were a home for abandoned babies and assisted social workers in finding  homes for the children.

Approximately 60 babies came through our doors in that period and most of them were placed in long-term foster or adoptive families.

In July of 2013, we received a call from the social workers in Pretoria.  They needed to remove 5 children who had previously been with us from a failed foster placement and wanted to know if we could take them back.  Our taking them would be the only way they would not be split up. They had at that stage been together for 6 years.

With the never ending need of orphans in South Africa, we had quickly filled up again and had a house full (6 is our capacity) of babies.  I visited Krugersdorp Social Development to see if there was any way we could take the additional children but there wasn’t.  Among the group who had been away from us for 4 years was our first ever baby and I just had a sense that I couldn’t allow these children to be lost in “the system”.  Miraculously 6 babies flew out of the doors – all to wonderful adoptive families – in 6 months.  On the 5 December 2013 our last two babies left for their forever families; on the 6 December I drove through to the largest Children’s Home in South Africa to fetch our children who then ranged from 6- 11 years of age.

It has been a challenging time adapting to the new age group and all the schooling issues etc. The demands on the staff are quite different from our days of taking care of babies.

In summary:

What do we do?

We are the 24/7 home for 6 children who now range from 9 – 15.

Who are these children?

4 girls and 2 boys who have been placed with us by social workers after being abandoned or removed from parents who are not able to take care of them.  The bits we have been able to piece together about their 4 years away from us suggest that it was a traumatic and far from

ideal time.

Where are we situated?

The children’s home is a house that has been donated by ABSA.  It is in Roodepoort, Gauteng.

Who is the staff?

We have a housemother who is legally obliged to live on the property, and 3 shift workers who cover the 24/7 roster.  Glenn and Cheryl manage the home but we do not live on the property.

What is our support base?

We receive government foster grants of approximately R800 per month per child. Apart from this we do not have any regular support from any church or corporate's and rely mainly on donations from family and friends.  God has kept us going and we praise him for this!
